Home Tour: Farmhouse Master Suite

Relaxing Master Suite

When my husband and I thought about building our first home together, we knew creating a relaxing farmhouse master suite would be an important aspect.  We wanted to create a space that felt like a calming retreat away from the real world.  We wanted it to be soft, yet sophisticated, and incorporate a few rustic elements elements to tie in the rest of our farmhouse decor.  So come on in, I’d like to invite you on a grand tour of our farmhouse master suite.

Upon deciding that a one-story, ranch floor plan would be best for us, we also opted to have the master suite located on one side of the home, and then the additional bedrooms located on the other side.  We felt like this would enable us to have some form of privacy down the road when we do start to have a family.  Now, we may learn to hate this layout since it will require us to do a lot more walking back and forth later on.  But then… YAY for getting those steps in!

Farmhouse Bedroom Sign

The Bedroom

Walking into our bedroom, you first see our queen bed split between two large windows.  I love how this lets in so much natural light.  Our windows open up to our backyard which backs up to cornfields.

Shopping Sources

Sign:  Let Love Abide Wood Wall Decor from Hobby Lobby

Greenery: Frosted Eucalyptus Garland from Hobby Lobby

Headboard: Hendry Nail Button Upholstered Panel Headboard from Wayfair

Mercury Glass Candle: Capri Blue Iridescent Candle Jar from Anthropologie

Bedside Table: Hayworth Collection Mirrored Silver Bedside Chest from Pier 1

Curtain Rods: Trumpet Square Drapery Rod Set in Black from Target

Chunky Knit Pillow: Sour Cream Throw Pillow – Threshold from Target

Accent Pillows: Mr. & Mrs. Right Pillows by Primitives by Kathy from Amazon

Duvet:  Nate Berkus from Target which is no longer available, but I’ve selected one that’s similar

With such a large, empty wall space I wanted to add something to draw your eye a bit from this angle.  I was so inspired by Erin over at the Cotton Stem.  She created a beautiful embroidery hoop wreath wall over her headboard, and it is to die for.  You can check out her full DIY tutorial here.

Farmhouse Ceiling Fan

We chose to add a tray ceiling, because we felt that the upgrade provided a high-end look to our master bedroom while providing additional height to the ceiling which makes the room feel larger than it actually is.  We incorporated a double-set of crown molding to give the ceiling a more classic, traditional feel.  We didn’t want the ceiling to appear too modern.

When I found this Hunter ceiling fan, I knew we just had to have it.  The best part is that the blades are reversible.  So if at any point, I want to change out the weathered oak color, the reverse side features a dark espresso color faux wood.  We actually purchased the same fan for our living room, because we loved it so much.

The paint color is the most beautiful mixture of gray/blue. The color is Benjamin Moore Coventry Gray.

The Bathroom

Stepping inside our master bathroom, we wanted it to feel as bright and light as possible.  The paint color that we selected for this space is Benjamin Moore White Dove.

Split Double Vanity

The must-have feature for our master bathroom was a split double vanity.  We knew that having a dedicated side to for him and her was the way to set up our marriage success for future years to come.  (hehe.)  But really… it’s so nice to be able to keep his shaving clippings on his side, and I’m sure he likes that the makeup mess stays over on mine.

White Bathroom Makeup Vanity

On the subject of makeup, due to the long and narrow layout of the bathroom, we had extra space to incorporate a makeup vanity next to the split sink on my side.  If you have a chance to add this to your bathroom design, I would highly recommend.

To pull in a taste of farmhouse design, we chose these vanity lights, because we liked how they looked like mason jars without being too rustic.  You can find them here from Lowes.

White Subway Tile Bathtub

Taking a long, relaxing bath at the end of a long day is my favorite.  So we opted for a large soaking tub featuring white subway tile.  I love keeping the look of the bathtub clean and simple.

Chevron Pattern Tile Floor

For the flooring of the bathroom, we knew we wanted to make an extra statement with a chevron pattern tile floor.  The look of a darker floor contrasted against the white walls keeps the bathroom from looking too bland and plain.

Thanks for taking a peek at our farmhouse master suite!

What a beautiful sanctuary Lauren. Our master suite is on the opposite side of the house from the other bedroom room and we love the privacy and separation. That vanity counter is such a bonus in your ensuite, we didn’t have room for one but have a long counter that I use.

Thank you friend! Yes- I agree. I think the layout was the way to go for us. It’s also nice because we’re super close to our laundry room this way. Hehe! The vanity counter ended up being a fun surprise. Not necessarily something that was planned on, but when we had the extra space it just made sense. 🙂

Thanks lady! You totally should. It gives the flooring just a little something extra. You can also do it with all different sizes of rectangular tile. The long skinny ones look pretty cool too!

What a cozy space! I really love the sign you have hanging above your bed – how sweet. It also draws the eyes upward and makes the room the super tall! I’m also super jealous of the double vanities, you two were smart to put those in :).

Awww thanks so much, Becky! I appreciate it. Yes, the double vanities were definitely a crucial addition to our master bathroom. When we shared a sink in our previous home getting ready in the morning was not pretty. Lol.

I’m not crazy about ceiling fans, but I recognize that sometimes we need them, and the tray ceiling makes it look so nice! I can definitely see myself incorporating that when we finally get around to out master addition. Great job!

Thanks so much, Keri! I agree– I would much prefer a beautiful light fixture over a fan, but my husband and I prefer to be cold sleepers at night. In this one scenario I had to sacrifice design for functionality. HAHA! Thanks so much for your sweet words.
